The Diabetic Retinopathy Project
The Vitreo-Retina Society of the Philippines (VRSP) created the Mulat Mata project to advocate for early diagnosis and treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) by promoting timely screening of patients with diabetes. The VRSP Mulat Mata project is a comprehensive program which includes
(1) Awareness Campaign,
(2) Education,
(3) DR Screening, and
(4) Research.
In 2020, VRSP was awarded the Novartis Excellence in Ophthalmology Vision Award (XOVA) to conduct the Awareness Campaign and Education, and DR Screening initiatives.

The Vitreo-Retina Society of the Philippines (VRSP), in collaboration with the Institute for Studies on Diabetes Foundation, Inc. (ISDFI) and Abbott, has initiated the Cardiometabolic Risk Recognition and Early Detection Program which is a nationwide initiative is part of the VRSP Mulat Mata Project under its DR Awareness Program, reaffirming VRSP’s commitment to promoting the early detection of diabetic retinopathy and preventing avoidable vision loss through physician education, timely referral, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
This initiative brings together diabetologists and retina specialists in a shared commitment to the early detection of diabetic retinopathy and the prevention of avoidable vision loss.
The CME program provided an excellent venue for meaningful learning and collaboration through expert lectures, interactive case discussions, and hands-on workshops on diabetic retinopathy screening. By strengthening partnerships between diabetologists and retina specialists, the program aims to promote timely referral and improve visual outcomes for Filipino patients.
